Course Overview:

Under current legislation, all staff must be provided with training in safe manual handling techniques.  This course is designed for nursing staff, healthcare workers, carers, or anyone involved with the moving & handling of patients on a daily basis.  Participants will learn how to assist, handle, and move patients safely as well as using patient handling equipment safely.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand and apply the Eight Principles of Safe Lifting.

  • Assess, move, handle, and transfer patients safely.

  • Identify the risks involved whilst working with patients.

  • Identify and assess when and which mechanical aids should be used when moving and handling patients.

​Course Programme:

  1. Current Legislation.

  2. Anatomy of the Spine & Musculoskeletal System.

  3. Injuries caused by poor handling techniques.

  4. Fitness, flexibility, and posture.

  5. Ergonomics.

  6. Patient Handling Risk Assessment.

  7. Principles of Safe Lifting & Handling.

  8. Demonstration and Practice of various lifting techniques.

  9. Demonstration and Practice of various patient handling aids.

  10. Practical assessment of a range of patient handling tasks.

Assessment:

Participants are individually assessed on their practical techniques

Certification:

Successful participants receive an Advanta Safety People Moving & Handling Certificate which is valid for two years.
